They currently have an opportunity for a Manager of Food Safety Initiatives at their corporate office located in the Midwest.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Proactively partner with the Product Development team to develop and commercialize new processing technologies.
• Implement microbiological programs that include incoming ingredient testing, environmental monitoring and finished product testing.
• With the Food Safety manager, provide leadership in food safety programs to assure that manufacturing processes and environments are microbiologically safe for producing both new and existing products.
• Act as a troubleshooting resource to investigate and correct microbiological non-conformities at plants and contract manufacturers.
Provide recommendations regarding process design, product disposition, and continuous improvement.
• Conduct HACCP risk assessments for new processing lines.
• Develop and oversee challenge studies to understand product microbiological stability.
• Create and implement scheduled audits and other monitoring activities to insure food safety (includes product disposition for all process deviated items)
• Review and interpret testing methods of internal and external microbiological laboratories.
• Oversee microbiological validation for new and existing products and provide direction for product disposition based on microbiological results.
• Maintain awareness of the food regulatory environment and emerging microorganisms of concern.
• Set the strategy for microbiological testing for pet food plants, co-manufacturers, and the research center.
• Develop preservation processes based on scientific principles to optimally produce safe and high-quality products, and provide process instructions to preserve /process products manufactured by the Company.
• Manage and upkeep all original process development files, process deviation files, and regulatory process filing files for regulatory compliance.
• Register necessary sterilization information with FDA & USDA for all pet food facilities.
• Supervise the sterilization and preservation of new products in the Innovation Center (also includes approving factory retort performance for production).
• Provide technical and scientific assistance for product development and operating factories.
• Provide necessary direction for all process deviations correction at factories.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Education
• Bachelors of Science degree in Food Science or Microbiology is required (or a degree in a related Food Engineering field – with  relevant commensurate food industry experience).
• Master of Science degree in  Microbiology is required.
• PhD in Microbiology is preferred.

Experience
• Minimum of 10 years of experience in Food Microbiology, Process Development, and Food Safety/Food Quality (all 3 areas) is required.
• Minimum 5 years’ hands-on experience in thermal process design is required.
Process Authority certification is preferred.
• Knowledge of  instrumentation process-control principles and practices is required.
• Knowledge of federal regulations pertaining to food preservation, methods, equipment, and microbiological aspects of food manufacturing is required.
• Experience with testing microorganisms of concern in acidified, low-acid, low-moisture, and refrigerated foods is required.
• Experience with aseptic processing and alternative technologies is a plus.
• Knowledge of food microbiology, good laboratory procedures, food safety controls, manufacturing processes, sanitary design, food law, Good Manufacturing Practices, auditing, troubleshooting, and microbiological test procedures is required.

Other
• Solid working knowledge of quality assurance, food manufacturing, packaging, processing and distribution is required.
• Strong ability to work in cross-functional and team-oriented environment with multiple disciplines.
• Proven capabilities in the area of project management.
• Ability to lead several projects altogether and simultaneously.
• Detail and process oriented with strong problem-resolution abilities.
• Demonstrated ability to evaluate microbiologically sensitive business risks.
• Effective oral communication skills and ability to appropriately communicate sensitive information in a timely manner.
• Ability to design and execute testing to manage food safety risks for new and existing products and technologies.
• Ability to effectively interact and manage vendors, consultants and regulatory agencies.
• Ability to travel 25-35% is required.
• Ability to work in food production facilities is required.
