Our client is a venture-backed, early stage ingredient and technology company. They are deploying a groundbreaking biomass manufacturing platform to transform food ingredients, improve human health and mitigate climate change. This Company is at the technological forefront of a new green revolution. Their scalable “farming with physics” platform takes indoor industrialized photosynthesis to the next level, creating sustainable, natural alternatives to artificial colors and other synthetic ingredients currently used in food, animal feed and personal care products. Their approach is constructed to drive down costs and increase consistency through innovative design, simplification and repetition, with an ultimate goal of realizing the potential for large-scale, carbon negative agriculture.

The Company is seeking an experienced food scientist to join its leadership team in the role of Director of Product Development.

The Director of Product Development will lead the ongoing development and scaling of biomass processing, optimizing the Company’s cutting edge biomass production system within a steady-state production environment. Secondary responsibilities will include product identification and development – including joint customer R&D, regulatory compliance, and supervision of third-party quality assurance programs. The ideal candidate will have strong cross-disciplinary capabilities and interests, as well as the energy and aptitude for a high growth, collaborative and innovative business culture. The position is based in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Responsibilities:

Biomass Processing Optimization

  • Design, testing and supervision of back-end processing systems for full-scale deployment
  • Testing and exploring new processing methods and techniques
  • Optimizing processes for cost, quality and safety

Product Development

  • R&D on new product discovery, including coordination with customer end-use personnel
  • Identifying new products for both existing and planned biomass production

Regulatory and Quality Assurance

  • Biomass testing
  • Ensuring manufacturing processes and approach conform with government, customer and industry standards

Additional responsibilities will include supervision of laboratory staff, documentation of processes and results, and communication and close collaboration with CTO, CEO and other leadership staff.

Qualifications:

Master of Science or equivalent experience in Food Science/Technology, Food/Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Microbiology or Chemistry. Experience in novel ingredient manufacturing and food innovation preferred – especially fermentation, algae or related forms of cellular agriculture.

Knowledge of large-scale ingredient manufacturing and interaction with large-scale Food and Beverage industry a plus.
